Finding the Pearl Extract... and Unexpected Week in Hong Kong.
Sometimes the universe gives you what you need instead of what you want. Case in point - I wanted a vacation where I could chill out, get warmth & sunlight and replenish my energy. Instead I got somewhat chilly & wet, fast paced and totally inspiring. A large dose of inspiration & to be reminded of how fun it is to travel solo while submersing myself in a new city was exactly what I needed. I’m so grateful that I can provide myself such opportunities like diverting my travel plans on the fly to Hong Kong when Thailand went all Pete Tong!
Last week I was discovering local Thai beauty secrets. This week I've been discovering such Hong Kong beauty staples such as Birds Nest Extract, Silkworm Cocoons and Pearl Powder. Veganism is not a priority in Hong Kong, but collagen regeneration and preventing sun damage are high on the list when it comes to skin care.
Of all my discoveries in Hong Kong, I find the reputed benefits of Pearl Powder resonate with me the most and I can see myself incorporating it as an ingredient in a future skin care creation.
Pearl Powder can be used externally by mixing it into face masks, creams or foundations. However, the real results seems to occur when it is taken internally. Personally I'm going to start experimenting with pearl powder as a dietary supplement.
According to Dragon Herbs:
Pearl Powder contains ALL the biologically active constituents of Pearl. It is rich in minerals, amino acids and co-factors that make it one of the premier anti-aging tonic substances.
Pearl Powder can help prevent the development of melanin, which causes freckles and dark patches on the skin as a normal process during aging. It can help slow down the skin's aging process and reduce wrinkles and sagging.
Studies in China have proven that pearl powder enhances the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD),the antioxidant enzyme which decelerates melanin production and helps reduce pigmentation, freckles, dark spots and brown blotchy patches. Consistent use of pearl powder can fade freckles and even occasional pimples (not cystic acne). Constant use can help assure that the skin will age much more slowly and that it will not be easily harmed by either time or the elements.
Pearl Powder is also a powerful Shen stabilizer, and thus it supports mood. It is among the elite substances of this type known. It can relieve uneasiness, nervousness, anxiety and tension. Pearl Powder supports the nervous system. Consistent use helps a person maintain their energy and vitality. It is an ideal Shen tonic and is the main ingredient in the finest Shen tonic formulations. It may be used for occasional sleeplessness.
Pearl Powder contains dozens of minerals, including: calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, strontium, copper, selenium, silicon, titanium, and more. Pearl contains calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, calcium phosphate, ferric oxide and silica.
But to many people’s surprise, pearl is not just made up of minerals. Pearl contains many amino acids. Eight of the amino acids are “essential” – in other words, they cannot be produced in the body but are required for health. Various components in Pearl participate in DNA and RNA metabolic activities, and thus can support cell renewal. Mucopolysaccharides in Pearl have been shown to prevent wrinkling and to increase libido and sexual potency in humans that is naturally diminished due to aging.
Pearl powder supports skeletal tissue and function, especially bone.
Pearl powder supports cardiovascular functions.
Safety studies on Pearl Powder have shown it to be absolutely harmless. It can be taken by anybody for the course of a lifetime without side effects.

I'll be flying back to Los Angeles on Friday - so perhaps next week's post will feature an Angeleno beauty secret... and it won't be Botox ;)
Have a fabulous week!
